To be Black and conscious in America is to be in a constant state of rage

I beg to differ!

    Last year I posted this quote and I agreed with it. I was thinking to myself that when a black person in America is Pro-Black that entails them being mad at ignorant white people as well as ignorant Black people, whites who are racist and destructive Blacks. But now I disagree. I've realized that to be Pro-Black you don't have to be angry. Having a conscious doesn't not mean you are constantly in a state of rage towards ignorance it means that you are aware of ignorance. Being angry and militant all the time feeds into the negativity and creates a "war". That's not what Black Power is about. Black power is about standing strong and uplifting blacks. That does not have to be done in an angry way. I fully understand the quote, especially after the past year. I see our government mistreating black people and I see black people being ignorant but that is not a reason for me to be angry all the time because my anger solves nothing.

Outfit of the week

    I wore this outfit to my younger sister’s graduation. This was honestly thrown together the night before. I love the jumper pants and will always dress them up when I wear them. This look is very casual and chic at the same time. While thinking about my look I thought “I look like I’m going on a job interview in 1986!” All I would need is a “Loud” blazer with the sleeves rolled up and this look will definitely be retro. This look can be worn by women of all ages at anytime during the year. It's not specific to one season, one event, nor location. It’s simply what I like and it came together beautifully.

As some of you already know, I am an aspiring wardrobe stylist. So, I might as well get my start on my own family. So my little sister went to her friend's graduation party the night of her graduation… wearing my clothes! I allowed her to go shopping in closet and she already knew what jeans she wanted to wear. So I gave her a tank top paired with a blazer which was both age and weather appropriate. She then put on her favorite sneakers which I bought her. The sneakers made the outfit casual and fun. This look can be wore any way based on what shoes you wear. Being that the jeans are a dark denim they are versatile. This look can be completed with sandals, oxfords, high heels, any shoe! My sister enjoyed her outfit and her night.

   This is a piece by Joshua Bennett. Amazing poet and Urban Word Alum. This poem evoked so many emotions in me and inspired. I will be writing "10 things I want to say to a black man". Look out fa dat.

Sell out?

    You should all know by now my love for Hip-Hop music. So please here me out when I say that feel rapper turned pop star Nicki Minaj is indeed a sell out. She started off as a raunchy femcee with tough lyrics and slick rhymes. If you're unfamiliar listen to one of her biggest hits, before she was known worldwide, "I get Crazy". Now listen to her latest hit "Starships". See/here/feel the difference? I understand artists becoming bigger and broadening their horizons but Nicki Minaj did a full 180. She started off as a rap artist and then decided to be a pop star. That's why I feel she's a sell out. I also feel that a lot of black music artists purposely make music that they know will be played on pop stations and will appeal to different audience, which I feel in't right. Make the music you made from the beginning, the music you truly love, not the music that everyone is going to like and certainly not the music that is going to make money. Nicki is a good rapper and it is her choice to make pop music, I don't like that choice. Recently Ice T was on the Wendy William's show to discuss his noew documentary film "From nothing to something: The art of rap" and of course, Wendy asked how he felt about Nicki Minaj. Here's the interview:



I respect Ice T's comment and I agree with it. BUT I still feel like Nicki Minaj is a sellout, lol.

My Genie Locs!

   Genie Locs are basically yarn braids. Like box braids, but done with yarn. The style is meant to resemble dreadlocks or locs, hence the name Genie locs. I am in love with how I look right now. And I thank my good friend Melly B. Melly is a poet and co-founder of The Art Initiative, a poetry organization which hosts a series of open mics and slams; she also dabbles in hair styling and had no problem blessing me with some yarn braids. She even provided the yarn. She use two strands of yarn for braid and har technique was different than regular box braiding. Melly didn't braid the yarn very close to my scalp and she purposely braided them tightly so that they resemble locs as much as they can.

Black Magazine

  A friend of mine, Megan Sarah Felix, has started her very own magazine. The college student, poet, aspiring journalist, and mini mogul has created this magazine for us by us. Us as in young black people striving for success. The magazines tag line is "More than just a hue". I interpret this as being black is much deeper than the color of our skin. Which it is. The magazine brings together different expressions of art, personalities, advice, opinions, and information. All geared toward encouraging the love of being black, uplifting the black community & highlighting young Black entrepreneurs and talent. I am featured in the magazine discussing my blog "I LOVE Box Braids!". and The very first issue just released on Monday, June 4th !
