The 80's baby- Friday night

Tribe NYC is a crew of kids here in New York who dress like the year is 1992. They pay homage to the old school Hip-Hop culture in many ways and they're also very popular. They're popular on tumblr, twitter, Facebook and everyone loves them. One of which, who stars in the video, is "The 80's baby". Most of these guys rap but he's the one making moves and making music. Though I don't know him personally, I am proud. The video was fun and should what hip hop is really about. Fun. The song itself is positive and just promotes having a good time. I love the beat(which is a common type of beat in NY) ad the sample is perfect. I look forward to seeing more from him and Tribe.

is Hip-Hop .. Dying?

For years many people have said that hip-hop is dead. To argue this, many other people bring up rap artists now-a-days who make good music with context. But, what too many people fail to realize is that hip-hop is not just rap music. Yes, rap has become a large representation of hip over the years and probably even last standing but the hip-hop movement was more than that. During "the golden age of hip-hop", the 80's- early 90's, there were many different forms which all collectively made Hip-Hop so powerful. There was B-boying/breaking/popping&locking(all forms of dance brought about by hip-hop), DJing, Graffiti art, and of course rapping. This is all shown very well in the 1984 film Beat Street. Which is a drama featuring Hip-Hop culture of the 1980's in New York City. If you were to watch the film and compare to life today, you may agree that hip hop is dead. Hip-Hop culture is not the same and rap music alone cannot keep it alive. You almost never witness graffiti artists who take pride in there work, or break dancers, or REAL DJ's. However this is not my conclusion. I recently read a quote which said "Hip-Hop isn't dead, it's just buried alive. That's why it called underground." There are REAL artists. People who break dance and DJ and real create art with graffiti and rap artists with actual; talent. They are just "Underground". Unknown, Unsigned, not in the forefront, not MAINSTREAM. Is there anything really wrong with that? is the true question. I feel that Hip-Hop needs a new revolution and I feel that its coming.

Color Blocking!

Color blocking is wearing an outfit in which the same bright/bold color or similar colors are repeated. No black or white here; COLOR from head to toe. Typically solid colors. This trend has really been coming up in the past few years and, I feel, is going to take over Summer 2012. The question is: who can color-block? My answer is: EVERYONE. Any and every fashionable person can spice up their look a bit by color blocking. Men and women of all shapes, sizes, ages, and complexions. I bring this up because a friend of mine posted a status stating that light skinned women should not wear dark colors and and dark skinned women should not wear bright colors. I BEGGED TO DIFFER and I immediately thought of color blocking. Here are a few examples of the trend:

Street Festival

Last Saturday my grandmother called and told me about a street fair by her job in Bushwick. There are a lot of these throughout the summer in Queens, Manhattan, and Brooklyn. They have tables set up lining the streets. Vendors sell food, toys, jewelry, clothes, knick-knacks, everything. Sometimes these street fairs include a live performance from a local music artist. This was a sign of summer time! The weather was great I enjoyed myself. I want to share with you a few photos from this event; the first of many street fairs to come for me in 2012.

Are you a young artist who has ever felt mis-represented by the media?

Have you ever been labeled "Hipster", "Misfit", "Weirdo" or anything else you most certainly are not?! Well my film is about you. Don't believe the hype: The story of the modern day bohemian. I am an artist and so are many of my friends. I've noticed that a lot of us have been labeled or have taken the outcast role sometime in our lives, so I came up with the concept for this film. Along with my good friend Mariah C. Robinson and her production company Underground Artist I will create this film. For US, by US. The goal of the film is to showcase the lives of young artists, discredit these stereotypes and show who we really are. I am very excited about this and in need of all the help I can get.

If you are interested in this idea please support us at http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/themarsrob/dont-believe-the-hype-the-story-of-the-modern-day our kickstarter page.

If you are still unclear on what this film is about click my "My DOCUMENTARY" tab at the top of my blog. Thank you :)

Outfit of the week

For this look I am wearing my favorite sweater, which I’ve worn countless times in the past year. I am in love with this sweater and I feel it is very versatile. The pants are amazing. They are very fitted and are similar to riding pants. They look like leggings but are actually pants, which is great. I added a little vintage touch with the “Bamboo” earrings and “Cazal” glasses.

Quote

"Real Religion is no Religion at all"

I agree with this quote because, religion is a system. If you are in touch with God and your spirituality you don't need religion.

Pop-Up Library?!

SO, one morning this past week I was on my way to school. While walking towards the bus stop I saw bright colored chairs, and bright colored bookshelves, and white people! A man and a woman. The woman greeted me, asked if I would like a free book and offered me some coffee. MY favorite price is free so of course I took a book! I don't drink coffee. They had tons of books, which were all donated. I grabbed one called grunts. Which is a mythical tale about warrior monsters call orgs. Not exactly my kind of book but everything happens for a reason. While on the bus I read the first few pages and found a book mark in the book which read "Occupy". Ah-ha! Apparently this had something to do with the occupy wall street movement, which is great. I was pleasantly surprised by this "Pop-Up Library" and it made my day. Here are a few photos I took with my phone:

I googled pop-up library and here's coverage of the endeavor . Courtesy of huffington post

Thrift Store Runway

A new online contest to celebrate thrifting! For those who don't know, thrifting is when one shops at a thrift store and thrift stores sell old/vintage/used items, mostly clothes.
Thrift Store Runway is an online fashion contest that will run through 2012 with five $100 prizes given away every month for the best submissions. This contest is a part of the movement to Bring Back National Thrift Week, which used to be a vibrant celebration of the virtue of thrift in America. From the early part of the twentieth century on up through the 1960s, Thrift Week events flourished from coast to coast . Somewhere along the way, though, the idea of thrift seems to have fallen out fashion. So now we’re gathering local and national sponsors to try to revive this lost tradition and, ultimately, the idea of thrift itself. While we work behind the scenes on those efforts, we hope you’ll have some fun with this contest and help us remind people how fashionable thrift can be!
How does it work?

  • Well you put together a trifted outfit in which all of your thrifted items only cost $50 or less combined.
  • Then take the best photos you can in your look.
  • Finally, go to http://www.thriftstorerunway.com/  click submit and submit your photos with a brief description on your outfit and the prices of each thrifted item.
For more in depth rules and guideline click here.

I love thrift shops, though I do not have many thrifted items. I will certainly do some shopping and then submit to this site for a chance to win. You may also submit more than once! Happy thrifting! :)
