Solange Knowles has blessed us...

...with her latest album "A Seat at The Table". The announcement of it's release came along with a total relaunch of her website and even a giveaway for fans. The website solangemusic.com is the perfect simplistic look at all things Solange. Many people know Solange Knowles as BeyoncĂ©'s sister but she is one of my biggest inspirations, as one can probably infer based on past posts I've made about her, and she has just drastically effected the web and the airwaves with "A Seat at The Table" including the digital book of the same title available for viewing on her website, offering over 100 pages of all of the song lyrics from the album, stylized on the page in poetic forms, and various glamorous yet subtly beautiful photos of herself and other Black people.

The album is a melodic dream offering the narrative of being Black in America right now. Sol-Angel presents the topics of mental health, black owned businesses, the use of the word "nigga", family and lineage, segregation, police brutality, racism overall but truly who we are, what we have done and what we can do as Black people. With songs like "Rise" "Weary" and "Cranes in The Sky" she addresses the overwhelming issues or struggles with being Black in America and the state of the world today from a subtle, personal, and emotionally transparent standpoint. This is still Solange's voice and Solange's story, yet it is all of our stories, all of our narratives and that is what a beautiful piece of art is and does. Your art is working when you can spread love in a way where it seems you are putting yourself and all of your flaws and pain along with happiness out into the world for consumption. The songs are strung together with a number of interludes including several accounts from the rapper Master P, a narrative from Solange's father, and a snippet from her mother. To include the voices, feelings, and ideologies of her parents is a pure representation of the Black experience. Often all we have is the fact that our parents, their parents, and so on have fought for us to be here and we have to give thanks that we are here. At times it feels that our family is all we have and it is the struggles of our ancestors that keep us going now. As many say, if you don't know where you come from, you won't know where you are going. Master P is an icon, especially in the south, he is most known for, and also reflects on this fact in the interludes, starting his rap career as his own business. Instead of waiting for a record lable to recognize and sign him he started recording his own music and selling his own music out of the trunk of his car. The use of his voice and his narrative is a clever way to add an image and a "voice of God" to the grand idea of Black resilience, resistance, and prevalence.

"If you don't understand my record
you don't understand me, so this is not for you"
Master P.

The very title "A Seat at the Table" is a considerably cliche allusion to the Black experience in America. In the Post-Slavery south segregation was the norm and Jim-Crow was the law. Often Black people still worked for Whites as maids and house-help, and were literally not allowed at seat at the dinner table. This title could also derive from the very well known Langston Hughes poem "I, Too" in which he declares "I, too, am America."
One of the most stand-out tracks on "A Seat At the Table" is "F.U.B.U.". FUBU the name of a clothing line founded by LL Cool J during the early 2000's is an acronym for "For Us, By Us" literally stating that the clothing was created for Black people by Black people. Solange presents the same exact sentiment on the track by the same name. She addresses trouble with racial profiling and racism as a whole Black people face everyday as she sings "All my niggas in the whole while world-- this shit is for us". She also states "Don't be mad you can't sing along, just be glad you got the whole wide world" addressing white people, the fact that white people can not sing along with this song because of the use of the word nigga, and white privilege. The song "Don't Touch My Hair" also offers the same kind of summation of a race related issue and the big picture.

Sunday Night Sol-Angel surprised us once again with two brand new videos. One for "Cranes in The Sky" and the other for  "Don't Touch my Hair". Both offering the stunning, breath-taking imagery we saw in the photographs in the digital book as well as subtle yet notably clever camera movement.

Comparisons to "Lemonade", the album equipped with a short film of music videos strung together, released by Solange's Big Sis in April are already to be expected no matter what kind of album Solange could have made. But as far as being magnificent representations of Black pride, Black love and Black power these are both exceptional projects. Especially with positive and encouraging images of Black women and Black Girl Magic. Solange's music always pulls from traditionally R&B with an alternative pop sound and even beats that have a late 80's early 90's feel, as usual Solange stayed true to herself.

Solange Knowles

Yes, Beyonce's little sister. But she has certainly made a name for her self in the past few years. Solange is one of my biggest inspiration's and I love her. Her style can be described as soulful, alternative, funky, and overall eclectic. Especially as of late. Everyone knows her as a style icon now, but she is indeed a singer. She released her first album: Solo Star in year 2002 and her second Sol-angel and the Hadley street dreams in year 2008. Both album tiles a clever reference to her unique name, I hadn't listened to first nor do I remember the single off that album But I love the second album. I love R&B and Soul music, and Solange's second studio album captures that perfectly. The album also defines who she is, with the first track "God given name". On which she states: "I’m not becoming expectations, I’m not her and never will be. Two girls going in different directions, Striving towards the same galaxy. Let my star light shine on its own.No, I’m no sister, Just my God given name" addressing comparisons to her older sister.

But now, Solange Knowles is a Fashionista, a trendsetter, and a DJ. She DJ's at clubs, parties, and has even done a party in London. Solange is using her fame to make guest appearances everywhere and using her style to make a statement while doing it. She was recently spotted keeping the party rockin’ at the Bean Pole/Kim Jones block party at the Opening Ceremony store New York City. She is an inspiration to all girls like me and not by just the way she dresses but her hair as well. Over a year ago Solange cut all her hair off and as it grew back she got Box Braids. I love braids, as you probably already know, and due to the trend of "Going natural" many others a getting their hair braided and basing the styles they want on Solange's hair. Here are a few of my favorite photos of Ms. Solange Knowles:

I LOVE THIS LOOK ON HER

I think I’m in love with Solange Knowles

Now, I love her as a Fashionista/Hipster/DJ but I'd love for her to release another album. I'm really hoping she does.

Solange: TRUE

I know I'm late, but One of my idols Solange Knowles has released an EP entitled "True" November of 2012. I just started listening to this about a week ago and I am in love.

The first single "Losing You" (which I posted about here) gave an overall idea of what this EP is all about. Each song can be interpreted as a love song but not your typical "I love you" "I want you back" or "F you, you did me wrong". These songs are truthful, hence the title "True". Each track has a similar retro feel to it, with the beats as well as Solange's soft melodic voice on each song.

A few of the songs can be categorized as "Sad" but they all give an honest account of things that can happen in a relationship. For example on both "Lovers in the parking lot" and "Bad Girls (Verdine version) Solange admits to doing someone wrong in a relationship and understands why that person doesn't want anything to do with her. "and still I try to pull you into my own hurricane, it’s like you spot me trying from a thousand miles away". I can easily compare Solange's honesty on this EP with European singer Gotye's hit "Somebody that I used to know". This song became very popular in the U.S. over the summer of 2012. The song is almost like an argument between Gotye and featured artist Kimbra. Both singers tell their sides of the story and it's not as typical as most break-up songs.

Other songs, of the 8, that stand out to me are "Somethings Never Seem to Fucking Work", "Sleep in the park", and "Don't let me down". "Somethings Never Seem to Fucking Work" is a reflection on a time when she was 17 and felt that she was in love but soon realized that somethings just don't work! "Don't let me down", similar to "Losing you", is a track on which she is professing her love to someone and hoping they feel the same way.
What I like most about the track "Sleep in the Park" is that she is repeatedly saying we can't survive on love babe, she explains a relationship where its like they're both homeless and all they have is their love for each other. I imagine a really cute white room video, using animation, for this song. She'd be wearing a baby doll dress and all the images she gives us in the song will come to life.

Solange recently announced a brief True tour via her blog(mydamnblog.com) with this photo.

Unfortunately I will not be attending the concert when she comes to NYC, =[, but I know it will be wonderful. I am a huge fan of Solange and to hear new music from her after all this time is extremely exciting for me. Not to mention the EP is very impressive and she stayed true to her personal style. I recommend everyone listen to True.

Solange LIVE!

Yes, yes I got to see my idol live in concert. As you may know, Solange Knowles is one of my biggest inspirations. I was excited to here about the Northside music festival presented by Converse. I've got clips of each performance from today's event in this video:

The park was filled and there were food, drinks, and free vitamin water! Of course I was only there to see Solange. I captured plenty of photos of her.

There is a thin line between Art and Entertainment

Now-a-days the entertainment industry has literally taken over. Everybody is trying to be famous and trying to make money. True art falls through the cracks. I was thinking about this when it comes to acting. Acting may be the truest art form in media. But business men still look for what looks better and what sells. All anyone is interested in is the money. It's shameful. One most recent example of this is DJ-ing. Dj's usually get hired based on what they've down before, talent, and overall personality. But as of late, a lot of celebrities are getting DJ jobs at parties. I mean, certain celebrities who aren't even on the music business. Such as Kirstie Alley, Tyson Beckford, Matt LeBlanc, and Solange Knowles. We all know and love a lot of these celebs, and you should all know that I love Solange Knowles but none of these people are true DJ's. They make appearances based on their Fame and make money. These people are practically taking food off the tables of DJ's who have been doing it their whole lives, and only know to DJ. Being an artist is already difficult when it comes to making money off of our crafts, especially in this digital era. Many of use, at a certain age, have to choose between what we love and what we need to do to survive. There's no such thing as an artist who isn't struggling. Unless, well, you're famous.
I am creating a film(the working tile is a little secret), a documentary to be precise. Which will document the lives of young artists voicing their opinions, and challenging certain stereotypes at the same time. This film will be similar to the late 1980's documentary about drag culture in NYC "Paris is burning".

Solange is BACK!

On the music scene that is. The soulful songstress, hipster queen, and my biggest inspiration(you can see my post about her here) has released a brand new song and video. The name of the song is "Losing you", an upbeat ballad about being confused in a relationship. The video showcases Solange and her funky group of friends fashionably having fun in South Africa. There are also scenes of her dancing in various beautiful outfits. Her group of friends are her real life friends, artists living in New York City who are basically tumblr royalty. One of which being Lizzy Okpo co-designer of clothing line William Okpo.

Here's the video:

I love this video for various reasons. Prior to watching I hadn't heard the song so I had no idea what to expect. I soon fell in love. The songs melody, message  and just the words are simple yet beautiful. The video doesn't necessarily match up with the story being told but when it comes to cinematography it is great. I enjoyed watching her and her beautiful friends have fun in the motherland. What more could you need?

Va$htie Kola

cold chillin’ (2010)

Literally the most amazing woman in the whole world. Well, in my opinion. She is talented, Beautiful, and a HUGE inspiration. Visionary Director, Party Producer, Style Maven, Lady of Leisure, Jordan 3 Villain, TomBoy Extraordinaire, Luxury Handbag Queen, Vintage Don, Fashion Addict and Art Nerd. This is Vashtie Kola, or as she is often called “Downtown’s Sweetheart.” With a friendly demeanor and uncanny ability in bridging the gap between underground cool and industry mainstream, Vashtie can take a meeting with cigar chomping execs and chill with graffiti crews on the streets of the East Village in New York City, where she currently resides.
Born and raised in Albany, NY as the youngest of three children of Trinidadian parents, Vashtie moved to New York City in 1999, when she attended The School Of Visual Arts in Manhattan to study directing/cinematography.
In 2006, she was asked to re-vamp the company of Island Def Jam as Director of Creative Services. Antonio “LA” Reid, president of Def Jam, said she would be “the one to keep the building cool, someone in tune with downtown cool and pop mainstream.” The corporate work environment took its toll on Vashtie. She found her creative expression was stifled. In 2007, she left her job at Def Jam to once again pursue her directing career.

She has directed music videos for Solange, KiD CuDi, Justin Bieber and more. This woman is literally my idol. She has her website http://www.vashtie.com/, youtube: http://www.youtube.com/user/vashtie#p/u, as well as a twitter page http://twitter.com/#!/vashtie and her newest Tumblr http://vashtie.tumblr.com/. On her Tumblr blog she posted:

So this is a message to all photographers out there ! This is a wonderful opportunity.

The FAQ of I LOVE Box Braids

I get asked a lot of the same questions over and over again on my blog I LOVE Box Braids. So here is our FAQ(frequently asked questions) =]

What to do to the ends of my braids? There are many options but the most popular (&what I do) is to dip the ends in boiling hot water. You could put them in curlers or leave them straight.

How much hair do I need for the super long thick waist length Janet Jackson/Poetic Justice/Solange inspired/Patra braids? At least TEN packs & do not cut the hair in half

What styles to do with my hair?/ How do I do one of those buns? I will automatically direct you to click our "Videos" tab http://iloveboxbraids.tumblr.com/tagged/video Most of the videos I've posted are tutorials of different styles as well as helpful tips.

Do you know any good places in (your city here) to get braids? NO I do not. Sorry. I live in Brooklyn, NY and I go to one place in Bed-Stuy called Nene's hair Braiding. If you're in the NYC area I suggest you go there because the prices are cheaper than anywhere else I've checked. Also I hear that places in Harlem are good. Other than that, I cannot help you. Try yelp.com, that site has reviews of businesses/shops and what not.

What are good prices for braids? It all depends on where you go. If you want long Janet Jackson braids they'll probably cost $150+. The place I go to doesn't even do them large but for the length would be $120. I paid $100 for my hairstyle now. To get a good price call multiple places and tell them exactly what you want and ask there prices for anything. See if you can haggle. Also ask friends/colleagues/ or any random person you see with a hairstyle you want.

Which style is better/last longer? In my opinion Braids last longer but twists are more classy there are a lot of styles to choose from. Click our "Specific Styles" tab then click the link to photos of the style you want to see. Make sure you look at all the photos just to see if you really like the style and if it's what you really want.

How do I take care of my hair? I always say Oil your scalp daily and wrap your hair every night. When your edges/new growth start to grow in brush them up each morning. Also use hairspray. I recommend olive oil. Another tip is to use a silk scarf/head wrap. Cotton bandannas adsorb the moisture and dry out your hair. Also wear a shower cap in the shower. again, check our videos tab :).

Did you get my submission? YES I get all submissions and add them all to the queue if you do not see them right away, wait.. Do NOT submit the same photo twice. Click the "Submissions" tab to see all submissions.

What are other hair blogs you follow/like? My faves are
