10 day thought provocation challenge

[Day 07]: Why do we say “I’m sorry” when a person passes away? What exactly are we sorry for?

I don't know. I've never said it, because I wasn't taught that way. I wouldn't say "I'm sorry" because I didn't do anything and I wouldn't say "I'm sorry to hear that" because then it sounds as if I didn't want them to tell me. Usually when someone tells me that their family member has passed away I'm either silent(because I have no idea what to say) or I ask if they're alright and try to say something encouraging. Saying " I'm sorry " just doesn't make sense to me.
